What types of ships are most effective in modern anti piracy operations?

Armed merchant ships that are difficult to board. You simply can't dedicate enough Naval assets to the task to prevent every rag-tag band of self-styled pirates from occasionally snagging a cargo ship if they crews can't or won't defend themselves. It's a big ocean and there's an endless supply of desperate men with little boats willing to give it a shot.
