Question about tranferring operating system?

hey i have a hard drive in my previous computer with windows XP on and i had planned to transfer it to my new computer because i can't afford windows 7 and new hard drive yet however my friend told me that the operating system might be connected to the old motherboard as to prevent piracy and that it won't work on my new computer, is he right?
